| 1423 | Combing through the 1820 census in New York, we find a Roswell Hatch living in Amherst, Niagara County, who has the same family profile as our Roswell Hatch, that is, his children are of the same sex and birth-range as those enumerated in the 1830 census. Remarkably, a few doors away in Amherst is Jason Hatch whose family profile also matches that of Jason Hatch found a decade later in Amity Township. Neither Roswell nor Jason Hatch are found in the 1830 census of Amherst (because they are in Amity Township in Pennsylvania.) An interesting history of Cheektowaga, New York, tells us the Town was formed from Amherst, March 22, 1839. It goes on to say, "Among the early settlers were Sam'l Lasure, Roswell Judson, Abraham Hatch, and Maj. Noble. The first birth was that of a child of Roswell Hatch, in 1810; and the first death, that of Franklin Hitchcock, in 1818. The first mill was built by Sam'l Lasure, in 1810; and the first inn was kept by Jesse Munson, in 1815." --J.H. French, Gazetteer of the State of New York (Syracuse, New York: R. Pearsall Smith, 1860), p. 288. Elsewhere we discover, "Settlement was commenced in Cheektowaga in February, 1808, by Apollos Hitchcock, who came from Schenectady, N. Y., and located on lot 72. In 1829 he purchased fifty-nine acres at Cheektowaga Station, including a saw mill on Cayuga Creek; he built a woolen factory and in 1844 both establishments were burned. The saw mill was rebuilt and now remains partly dismantled. Among other settlers prior to the war of 1812 were Alexander Hitchcock, Eliphalet Densmore, Jason and Roswell Hatch, Samuel Le Suer, and Major Noble. The first birth of a white child was that of a child of Roswell Hatch in 1810." -- History of Cheektowaga, New York. From "Our County and Its People," a Descriptive Work on Erie County New York, edited by Truman C. White. The Boston History Company, publishers, 1898. Roswell had three daughters. One of them may have been the child born in Cheektowaga, New York, in 1810. | Hatch, Roswell (I2312)
