1973 Ethel was a beautiful young woman who stood about five-foot-one and never weighed more than a hundred pounds. Ethel's father left the family when she was still a young girl, and her mother turned their home into a boarding house. As a teenager, Ethel did housework for local families to earn money. Around 1902 she married William Carroll and had a daughter, Marjorie. Shortly thereafter, they divorced. When Ethel married Dell, they both brought daughters named Marjorie to the marriage. To avoid confusion at home, Marjorie Bisbee became known as "Big Margie" (because she was older and taller), and Marjorie Carroll was "Little Margie." Ethel is remembered by her grandchildren as exceedingly gentle and kind. Around 1950 her kitchen was equipped with a hand operated water pump mounted at the sink; a wood-fired cook stove; an ice box; and an "A-frame" electric toaster, on which the toast had to be turned after it was sufficiently browned on the first side. She had a "cold cellar" that was entered through a stone-and-mortar basement, where she kept her home-canned vegetables from the garden, and large earthenware crocks of home-made sour kraut. Her house was heated by a cast iron wood stove in the "front room," and she had an upright piano in the "parlor," which she played when her children gathered for special occasions. All of her children were amateur musicians. After Dell's death, Ethel sold their house and lived with her daughter, Helen Stone, on Graves Street in Union City. Hatch, Ethel Mae (I22)

1995 Excerpted from "The Melia Family" by Kay Melia

"The oldest son of Jessie and Glen was Kenneth, who graduated from Bucklin Hight School, and Kansas State University. Kenneth went into the Army at the beginning of World War II and became a tank commander. He was in that tank on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. His tank was destroyed by the Germans when Kenneth had gotten as far as onshore. He was standing in the turrett to see throgh the smoke and battle explosions, was blown out and severerly injured and subsequently taken prisoner. He regained enough alertness to bury his dog tags so that he would not known to be an officer, and later was moved by boxcar to a prison camp somewhere in Germany, where he would spend the rest of the war, a total of 18 months. At war's end, he returned home, married his college sweetheart, Lavonne, had a couple of boys, and became deeply involved in agricultural education. He was a County Ag Agent in Rice county for awhile, and eventually became involved with the Colorado Agriculture Department, where he would spend many years while living in Ft. Collins. His two sons were raised there, and both of them and their families are still living in the Denver/FtCollins area. Kenneth and Lavonne could be found every winter in the south of Arizona in their beautiful Silver Stream home. Lavonne passed away in 1999, and Kenneth Died in 2001, in Tuscon and lived to be 82 and was certainly a shining example of Tom Brokow's "Greatest Generation."
Kirkpatrick, Orville Kenneth (I25261)

1996 Excerpts from "The Melia Family" by Kay Melia 2001

Jessie Melia was the first child of Newt and Grace Melia, married Glen Kir
kpatrick, the son of another old pioneering family. Glen was a prominent cattleman, raising registered shorthorn cattle, as well as a lot of horses, including at least a dozen Shetland ponies at about any given time. Glen owned a couple of big threshing machines along with his dad, and did a lot of custom thrashing around the country. Glen and Jessie's farm was located about a mile south and a mile east of where Jessie was born, and had 4 children. Glen died in 1962, and after living alone on the farm for a number of years, Jessie moved to Bucklin to live with son Keith and his wife Charlene. Jessie was just over 90 when she passed away.

1997 Excerpts from a newspaper article of unknown origin discussing the history of Bisbee, Arizona:

"Riley finally landed in Nevada, and after a time, he arrived at Elko. There he invested in a copper mine, and in the course of time erected a smelter. Lewis Williams became his superintendent. The venture turned out a failure and Riley dropped considerable money. From Elko he came to Arizona...."

(After visiting the mining camp at Mule Gulch (present day Bisbee), Riley began thinking of finding partners to develop a larger operation there.)
"John Williams, Sr., along with a son-in-law by the name of Bisbee had a mining office in San Francisco. John Williams, Sr. was the father of Lewis Williams."

"When Riley reached San Francisco he went to the office of Williams and Bisbee. Ballard and Martin had been at the office the morning of the same day Riley arrived. They left word that if Williams and Bisbee heard of any mining property of merit to let them know. ... On the arrival of Riley at the office of Williams and Bisbee, he made known his mission, and these men informed him that they would see Ballard and Martin, and arrange for a meeting, and the meeting occurred the following day. At this meeting an agreement was made and John Ballard, Ed Riley and John Williams, Sr., came to Charleston (Arizona). There they were met by Ben Williams, who, as has been stated, was working for W. B. Scott. Ben Williams accompanied them to Mule Gulch."

The article continues to describe how Ballard, Martin and Riley bought an interest in the Queen and King mines. John Williams, Sr. surveyed the various mining operations in the area informed the three partners that it would be a good place to build a smelter. Williams reasoned that even if the Queen mine did not pan out, there were plenty of other miners who would make use of their smelter. Williams personally led a workforce in clearing and prospecting for ore near the Queen. While the Queen was being developed, Lewis and Ben Williams participated in the building and operation of the smelter. The smelter began operations on August 20, 1880. The Bisbee post office was established Sept. 7th, 1880. The town and post office were named after Judge Bisbee, partner of John Williams, Sr.
