| 2110 | First settler of the name in Buckfield. Abijah Buck left New Gloucester, Maine with a group of hunters and came to what is now Buckfield, Maine: firstly to select lots for settlement and secondly for good hunting. "Streaked Mountain, " "Twenty Mile River," "Owl Mountain" and "Bog Creek" had long been given their present names and the region was famous for bear and catamount. Abijah Buck, then 34 years old, had served with the Colonial forces in 1760 and had previously been a "Scout to the Eastward." He was born in Dunstable, Mass., the son of John Buck, Jr. Abijah wrote a fair hand for those times and records in his diary, "Bucktown, March 4, 1777--beginning this town at this time." "The Bucks of Buckfield descended from William Buck, a plowwright who emigrated to Salem, Mass. in the ship 'Increase' in 1635. | 2135 | Following from "The Melia Family" by Kay Melia "Glenn Kirkpatrick, the son of another old pioneering family. Glen w as a prominent cattleman, raising registered Shorthorn Cattle, as well as a lot of horses, including at least a dozen Shetland ponies at about any given time. Glen owned a couple of big threshing machines along with his dad and did a lot of custom threshing around the courntry. Glen and Jessie's farm was located about a mile south and a mile east of where Jessie was born on Grandad Newt's homeplace. Jessie had four children." "The Kirkpatrick family was a busy one, and extremely hard working. Like most of us, they grew just about everything they ate during the years of the depression and the war. Glen died in 1962, and after living alone on the farm for a number of years, Jessie moved to Bucklin to live with Keith and Charlene, who created a complete independant apartment for her on the ground floor of their spacious home in the south part of Bucklin. Jessie was just over 90 when she passed away." Crandall Melia (also a first cousin) Adds--------" What I remember about Uncle Glenn was his Modified Model A Ford roadster which had all of the body removed with the exception of from the windshield forward, with open cockpit and the back was built up with cage like boxes to hold the coyote dogs. He always had a pack of dogs which could track them down. We would ride across the open ground, some times with an airplane to flush them out, and when they were spotted, we would release the dogs to catch them. This was before the days of seat belts, and I just remember "hanging on." I also remember him as a larger than life John Wayne type, always wearing a buff colored Stetson and cowboy boots. What I remember about the Kirkpatrick home(when I was a kid), was that they had the most fabulous feather bed mattresses which Aunt Jessie made, and they had a basement on the farm which was always cool in the hottest summer, and I used to go down there and lay in the feather bed in Keith"s room and read the most fantastic collections of Mechanics Illustrated magazines I had ever seen." | Kirkpatrick, Alva Glen (I25260)

| 2137 | Following thanks to Kay Melia from his "The Melia Family" "And then there was Emerson Vernon Melia, the fifth and last son of Patrick and Catherine, Born Oct 29, 1875. He would become the longest living member of the family. Nobody knew him by his given name of Emerson Vernon. For some reason, he steadfastly disliked the moniker, and became simply, Jim. As his brothers found work in other places in the early days, Jim stayed mostly at home, helping to care for his mother, and helping with the farm. Part of his duties seemed to be to take charge of the cattle operation. He spent many summers herding cattle along the south side of the Arkansas River, near where the Bucklin Bridge now stands. That area, and on east of there, was still mostly government land because homesteaders had mostly passed it by due to the extremely sandy, rolling hills that bordered the river all the way to Great Bend. Soon, however, Jim was encouraged to go to work for one of the railroads that were making such wild efforts to be the one of choice going through Bucklin at the time. The Rock Island won the war, and Bucklin soon became a division point as work continued to build the line on westward. Of course, it so happened that Newt, Jim's older brother who worked for the Rock Island, already, that did the encouraging. Jim took the advice, and became a railroader, and both boys now worked on the original Rock Island Line between Bucklin and Liberal. It was in the area around Plains and Kismet that Newt met the daughter of one of Meade County's biggest farmers. Her name was Grace Birdie Bisbee who later became his wife. It just happened that Newt's girlfriend had a sister, Leona Josephine Bisbee, and Newt and Grace introduced her to Jim. And while Newt and Grace were married in 1897, it was not until New Year's Day in 1902 that Jim and Leona tied the knot. They continued to live and work in the Meade County area until Jim had saved enough money to buy three quarters of land adjacent to the original homestead, just east of Ford .In 1905 he purchased 3 quarters just to the west of his mother's place, where he continued to live until his death at Trinity Hospital in Dodge City. Three children were born to Jim and Leona.... Leroy, Bernard, and Marie. Leona Passed away on July 9, 1955 at the age of 79. Jim remained on the farm until he passed away on Thanksgiving day, 1965 at the age of 90. Both are buried in the Bucklin Cemetery. INTERESTING NOTE; The Bisbee family, of which Grace married Newt and Leona married Jim- (Grace and Leona were sisters) consisted of five girls and a boy.....the boy the youngest. The Melia family was made up of 5 boys and a girl... the girl being the youngest." | Melia, Emerson Verne (I12387)
