His first wife, Nazareth, died in 1658 and he then married Margaret, the widow of his friend Jacob. He died in 1688, aged 100 years. His son Jacob resided in West Street, West Hingham. | 3660 | James Bisbee moved to Chenango Co., N. Y. and is listed in the Census of 1810 in Town of Preston, which later became McDonough. The 1810 US Census lists, "James Bisby, 2 m. < 10; 1 m. 26 < 45; 1 fem. 16 < 26." James Bisbee was an Ensign in 1816 and a Lieutenant in 1817 in the 32nd Brigade of Infantry, Chenango, Co., N. Y. The 1850 US Census, McDonough, Chenango County, N. Y. lists James Bisby as a farmer 67 yeras old and born in New York State; his wife Polly as 64 years old. Their correct place of birth was given in the 1860 census. The same census for McDonough lists James Bisby Jr. as 29 yeras old, his wife Julia as 26 years old. There are three children shown to be in James Junior's family; Maroni, fem., five years; Nephi B., m., three years old and Mary J., fem., 1 year old. Again, same census, Hiram H. Bisby, brother of James, is listed as 28 years old and Caroline, his wife, 24 years old; both listed once in McDonough, N. Y. and again in Norwich, N. Y., ages same in both instances. Bolivar is listed in McDonough, age 24 years. There were no Bisbees listed in Pharsalia, N. Y. but Sherburne, N. Y. listed Elizabeth, age 24 years; Emma, 8 years and James K. 6 years. The 1860 census lists no Bisbee in McDonough, but James was listed in the Pharsalia census, age 76 years, a farmer; tax assessment was $600 real estate and $500 personal property. Polly Bisbee, his wife, was listed as 73 years old and a housekeeper. Both places of birth were given as Massachusetts. Chenango County, N. They stayed in the Barnardo Orphanage until each reached age 12 years. At this time James was brought to Canada to work on a farm. James was sent to Palgrave, Ontario to work and live with the Carter family, which consisted of two bachelor brothers and their spinster sister. His first language was Gaelic and he and his siblings were the first generation on the island to learn to speak English at all. He was the younger brother of my Great-Grandmother Anne MacKenzie, who I knew as a small boy (she lived to 98 years of age). At about the age of twenty he left for America and family tradition has it that he arrived in San Francisco just in time for the earthquake of 1906. He was involved at some time with gold mining and he sent his sister a small gold nugget which she kept on her mantlepiece for the rest of her life. He married Sarah Bisbee and they had four children, James, Clara, Chaney and George. He died on 22nd May 1954 and is buried in the El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove, Monterey County, California. Sara Bisbee died in 1976 and is buried beside him. There is still one relative of James's living in his home village, his neice Peggy Anne Matheson who is the daughter of his sister Catriona.
