| 5753 | SHATTUCK MEMORIAL CEMETERY AKA SHATTUCK IOOF LODGE #303 CEMETERY SEC-28 TWP-21 R-25 LOCATION: ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF SHATTUCK, ALONG HIGHWAY 283. NORICE WAS A PUMP STATION FOR THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA AND SANTE FE RAILROAD, WEST OF THE SETTLEMENTS OF GAGE AND FARGO. THE FIRST POST OFFICE WAS RUN BY WILLIAM ROBB IN 1893. WILLIAM MCCOY WAS POSTMASTER FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS IN 1894. THOMAS N. MILLER WAS THEN NAMED POSTMASTER TILL 1901 WHEN MR. ARTHUR H. WAGNER WAS COMMISSIONED. NORICE WAS LATER CHANGED TO SHATTUCK, BEING NAMED FOR GEORGE O. SHATTUCK A DIRECTOR FOR THE RAILROAD. THE ODDFELLOW LODGE OWNED THE CEMETERY TILL SOMETIME IN THE 1960'S WHEN THEY TURNED THE DEED OVER TO THE CITY OF SHATTUCK. 1ST GRAVE DUG IN SHATTUCK IOOF CEMETERY WAS THAT OF F. LEWIS CAUDLE IN 1905. MR. CHARLES S. CHAMBERS WAS ONE OF THE IOOF LODGE MEMBERS THAT HAND DUG THIS GRAVE. A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE DESTROYED A GOOD PORTION OF THE TOWN IN FEBRUARY 1908. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO RECORD OF LOSS OF LIFE FROM THE FIRE. IT IS RECORDED THAT MRS. A. C. OLIVER WAS INVOLVED IN CEMETERY RESTORATION AT ONE POINT IN TIME. THE NEED OF RESTORATION UNKNOWN. IN 1992 THE TORNADO THAT DEVISTATED SHATTUCK DAMAGED MANY HEADSTONES. THE MONUMENT COMPANIES VOLUNTEERED TO HELP REPAIR THE DAMAGED STONES. THE SOUTHEAST SECTION OF THE CEMETERY IS LISTED AS FREE LOTS. THESE LOTS WERE REPORTEDLY USED FOR PAUPER AND A FEW SEGREGATED BURIALS. FEW, IF ANY OF THESE GRAVES WERE MARKED. WE ARE NOT SURE THEY WERE EVEN RECORDED. THESE LOTS ARE NO LONGER USED FOR BURIAL. THERE ARE MANY UNMARKED, UNRECORDED GRAVES IN THIS CEMETERY. FUNERAL RECORDS SHOW SEVERAL BURIALS HERE THAT FOR SOME REASON WERE NOT RECORDED IN THE CEMETERY RECORDS. CONTINUED RESEARCH NEEDS TO BE DONE TO TRY TO UPDATE AND COMPLETE ALL GRAVE SITE IDENTIFICATION.
