Mabel Alice, born Oct 21, 1901, third child of Newt and Grace Melia, and born in the old farm house on the farm. Mabel was an extremely pretty girl, and completed grade school at Fonda, graduated with class of 1921 in Bucklin, and attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, where she received her teaching degree, and was a member of the famed Bethany College Choir which continues to this day to perform the Messiah at Christmas and Easter for thongs of people.

Mabel taught at several rural schools including Daisy Dell and North Star. She worked at the Bucklin Post Office for about 5 years. She was married for a very short period, and the marriage was subsequently anulled. In 1946, she formed a partneship with her Father, Newt, and her brother Elmer and bought the only dress shop in Bucklin and was in business there for 4 years, before selling the shop in 1950 and moving to Denver, Colorado, where she spent 25 years working in the foundation departments of the May Company and Joslins. She later managed those departments in The May Company.

In 1975, she returned to Bucklin and lived out her years there.

After the Revolutionary War there was a large movement of settlers from Mass. "to the Eastward" into Maine. One reason was that soldiers had been paid in script which was of small value in trade, but was taken at face value for purchase of land from the government.

Charles Bisbee bought land in the Township of Sharon, now Sumner, Maine, of Benjamin Darling of Hanover, Mass. and visited Sumner in 1783.

Buckfield had been settled seven years and Sumner, Maine was a wilderness. Charles put up a cabin and returned to Pembroke, Mass., where he had lived after the war. The next spring he took his family to Provincetown and from thence to Yarmouth, Maine by packet and then on horseback to what is now Sumner, Maine, arriving there on the 5 of June 1784.

Carefully selecting the land and utilizing the help of his large family, he soon cleared up a good farm and saw his sons and daughters settled on farms nearby.

Charles died on the twenty-third anniversary of his arrival in Sumner.

The following letter was written by Elisha Bisbee to William Ford who had married a sister of Beulah Howland, his aunt. The letter has been given to Dr. William B. Lapham by Miss Lydia Ford, daughter of William Ford of Hanson, Mass. The letter is as follows:

"Dear Uncle

"I embrace this opportunity to inform you that we are well as common. I have nothing new to write. It is a general time of health here. We have had a very moderate winter and as forward a spring as we have had since I lived here. Bread and meat are plenty and cheap and labor bears a very high price and is not to be had at any rate.

"I was at the widow Child's lately; all well. The Judge of probate has done very extraordinarily well by the widow; her dower would fetch twelve of fifteen hundred dollars at least, and the doctor's estate is likely to come out much better than was expected.

"I have not had a line from you this many a day, and have done looking for any, but I am in hopes my scribbling may stir you up so that I may know how you and your relations are in that old worn out country, and pray don't miss any opportunity of writing to me as I shall take it very hard if you do.

"We have had a very exceeding snow storm here. It began on Friday the fifteenth of this instant (April) early in the morning, and grew hotter and hotter until Sunday about noon when it abated. The snow fell 18 or 20 inches deep and there is some of it to be seen now. It was far the smartest storm we have had for the winter past.

"Our two eldest girls have got married and each of them has a boy. They married men of property and are in a way to live if no misfortune overtakes them.

"Remember me to all who may inquire. Joshua Ford's oldest daughter is married and has got a boy.

6100 The conclusion that Reuben Bisbee's daughter Lydia became wife of Truman D. Reynolds is not directly proven, but the circumstantial evidence is compelling.
1) From Reuben Bisbee's 1865 Last Will and Testament, we know that Lydia Bisbee's married name was Reynolds.
2) Lydia Bisbee was born in 1811; according to the census this Lydia Reynolds was born about 1811.
3) Lydia Bisbee grew up in Madison County, New York; according to the census Lydia Reynolds was born in Madison County.
4) Lydia Bisbee's parents were born in Massachusetts; according to the census Lydia Reynolds' parents were born in Massachusetts.
5) Mrs. Truman Reynolds lived in and around Wattsburg during the mid- to late 1800's. Three of Lydia Bisbee's siblings--Joseph, Reuben and Betsy--all lived in close proximity to Mrs. Reynolds at one time or another. In 1875 and 1880 she is living right across the road from the Joseph Bisbee homestead.
6) Through 40 years of electronically searchable census, no other "Lydia Reynolds" has surfaced, who is of Lydia Bisbee's approximate age and place of birth.
7) If Lydia Bisbee and Mrs. Truman Reynolds are indeed the same person (as your compiler believes they are), then Lydia's son Erastus married his first cousin Ruth, daughter of Joseph C. Bisbee, a conclusion supported by evidence that their two children suffered afflictions often associated with marriage between first cousins.
