| 7015 | We know from the record that Joseph C. Bisbee was father of T. J. Bisbee; however, It is not clear that Sally Ann Morey was his mother. In 1848, T. J. married Caroline Maxfield at her father's home in "Log City" (Eaton), in Madison County, New York, by Elder Putnam. During the Civil War, he served as a cook with Company D, 114th New York Volunteer Infantry. Records of the First Congregational Church of Lebanon, Madison County, New York, p. 172: "The sacrament of the Lord's Supper was administered. Thaddeus Bisbee, Caroline Bisbee, Mary Richardson, and Charlotte Maxfield receive the ordinance of Baptism and together with Sylvia Ann Seeley entered into covenant with the Church." Also, p. 181: Apr. 27, 1878, "In the matter of non-resident members, the following persons have experienced a desire to be considered as walking in fellowship with the Church.... Mr. and Mrs. Thadius Bisbe." Also, "Voted Charlotte Maxfield's name be dropped from the record." Also, "Thaddeus Bisbee, Caroline Bisbee dismissed Jan 10, 1880. Charlotte Maxfield excommunicated." T. J. and his son Willis homesteaded near Franklin, Franklin, Nebraska. After a minimal period of time, they sold their properties for good profit. Thaddeus and Caroline moved into the village of Franklin, where T. J. operated a meat market (History of City of Franklin, 1976, 2nd pub 1983, Service Press, Henderson, Neb.), and ran a hotel (1885 Census). Caroline became an active real estate investor. The following quotes are from affidavits found in T. J. Bisbee's Civil War Pension File: "Our name is spelt Bisbe (and) if it is spelt any other way it is the falt of the riter." -Harvey T. Bisbee, 1894. "The name "Bisbe" is often spelled and written Bisbee ending with ee, but Bisbe is undoubtedly the correct way of spelling the name, as I find it so written by said Thaddeus J. Bisbe in his own hand writing in our family record in our family Bible, and also written on other occasions and places such as legal papers which are now before me at this writing; and the name is spelled "Bisbe" in his Discharge from the U.S. Army dated June 18th, 1865, which is also now before me. I do not remember of ever seeing Thaddeus J. Bisbe write his surname Bisbee, although we lived together, being husband and wife for forty-five years." -Caroline M. Bisbee, 1895 | Family: Thaddeus John Bisbee / Caroline Mariah Maxfield (F1306)

| 7033 | What's in a name? In this case, the given names of Joel and Sophia Kibbe's son and grandson confirm Sophia's identity. Sophia's cemetery record lists her as wife of Joel Kibbe and daughter of Reuben Bisbe (note the single 'e' in the spelling). Their first son was named Jared Ebenezer Cushman Green Kibbe--Sophia's maternal grandfather was Ebenezer Cushman of Kingston, Massachusetts. Jared E.C.G. Kibbe named one of his own sons Emmett Bisbee Kibbe. The names, and the fact that "Sophia Kibbe" was remembered in her father's last will and testament, suggest that Joel and Sophia maintained a close relationship with her parents after they married and moved from Lebanon to Cortland County. | 7037 | When John Bisbee was 19 years old he worked in a Massachusetts shoe factory where he remained for about one year before going to sea for the summer on a cod fishing vessel in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Following these experiences he attended Auburn Academy in Maine. His former employer in Massachusetts having recommended him to Messrs. Patten, Lane and Merriam, shoe manufacturers and wholesalers, John took a position in the shoe business and remained with the firm in New York City for over two years. The firm failed during the Civil War because many of their customers were in the South. John Bisbee volunteered for military service in April 1861 but was not accepted. He later returned to Maine and taught school and farmed at Wilton. John left Maine on March 20, 1865 with his wife and infant daughter for the West, staying in Sparta, Wisconsin for a while. He next set out for Minnesota by team in company with his cousin, Benjamin Frank Thompson, who settled in Kasota, Minn. on a farm. John Bisbee bought land near Garden City as the outlying country was beset by fears resulting from the Sioux Indian massacre of settlers in the Minnesota Valley. John taught school and farmed for a time and then for the next four years worked in the T. N. Boynton and Company store in Garden City. The following four and one-half years he worked as a bookkeeper and salesman in Madalia, Minn. In 1874 John Bisbee formed a partnership with Matthias Olson in a merchandising, grain and produce business in Madelia. The firm, first as Bisbee and Olson, and later as Bisbee, Olson and Boynton, carried on successfully for 17 years at which time (1891) Bisbee sold out to Olson. For a number of years thereafter Bisbee engaged in the farming, stock raising and the grain business. John Bisbee was greatly interested in the development of the new country which in his youth had been described as "The Great American Desert." He always considered it one of the best agricultural regions of the world. John Bisbee made long and continued efforts for many years to develop a superior seedling apple adapted to the climate of Minnesota and the midwest. He always took an active interest in public affairs and during his long residence in Minnesota served the community in various ways. John Bisbee is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Madelia. | Bisbee, John (I1829)
