- Obituary for Ruth E. Melia in Bucklin Banner December 15, 2004
"Ruth Evelyn Melia, 94, of Winfield, Kansas passed away Thursday evening, November 25, 2004 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Born on August 5, 1910 on a farm near Protection, Kansas, she was the daughter of C.C. "Mont" and Blanche L. (Denney) Towner. She was raised and received her education at Protection, graduating from Protection High School in 1928.
She began her nurses' training at William Newton Memorial Hospital in 1935 and graduated as a registered nurse in 1938. In 1939 she moved to Chicago, Il., where she was employed until 1946 as a night supervisor at Chicago Lying in Hospital and took post graduate work before returning to William Newton Memorial Hospital.
She was united in marriage to Eugene Melia in April of 1950 in Lexington, Ks. The couple lived in Douglas, Ks. for a few years where they worked at the meat locker. The couple moved to Johnstown, Colorado in 1955 and they operated a grocery/appliance store and meat locker. Mr. Melia preceded her in death in 1962. She returned to Winfield in 1962 and began employment at William Newton Memorial Hospital as a charge nurse on the 3-11 shift on second floor east until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield, where she was actively involved in the Pathbuilders class. Ruth also was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, where she received her 75 year pin, Rosetti Circle, American Legion Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star and Business Professional Womens' Organization and was named woman of the year in 1983. Her hobbies included quilting, cooking, church activities and traveling.
Her family includes her nieces, Nephews, a sister-in law Pauline Lathen of Dodge City, and a host of great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceeded in death by her brothers, Clermont and John Glenn Towner.
The funeral was held Saturday, December 4th at 9:30 am at the first Christian Church in winfield. Burial was in Bucklin Cemetery at 3:00 pm."
