  • Notes 
    • Abigail Howland or "Aunt Nabby," as she was called, owned a cranberry meadow. The town passed an ordinance forbidding picking except at certain times. She picked as she pleased and a sheriff with a warrant made his appearance to arrest her. After reading the warrant to her the sheriff received this reply, "I am an old woman of seventy-one. I have picked cranberries since I begun. You can make laws when you are inclined to, and I will pick cranberries when I am a mind to."
