SUSAN M. BISBEE LEIGH, 1915-2001
Lewiston -- Susan M. Bisbee Leigh, 86, passed from this veil of tears, Dec 1. She was born May 6, 1915, in Canton, the daughter of Eldon G. Bisbee and Cyrena O. Carter Bisbee. She spent her earliest years in Canton. The family later relocated to Auburn. She graduated from Edward Little Hight School in 1933 and entered the workforce. She worked as secretary for Rev. Ellis Holt of the Court Street Baptist Church for many years and later at Patrons Mutual Insurance Co. She met her life long companion, Joseph Leigh of Lewiston, around 1934, marrying on Jan. 5, 1935.
Upon retirement, the couple traveled between Maine and Florida, but the passing of time and lure of grandchildren made them resettle full time in Maine. Their's was a long-lasting union, lasting some 65 years before Joseph's passing in April of 2000. One of her passions was that of a seamstress and knitter. Through the years, her skills brought joy and warmth to her family and friends, these articles today being passed from generation to generation. Her passion was not restricted to creation, but included the companionship of family and friends, long drives down a country lane and fried clams.
Her immediate family, daughters, Nancy Leigh Bernard of Cumberland Center; and Kathryn Leigh Jacques of Clinton; son James of Wiscasset, survive her.
Also surviving her are seven grandchildren, Deborah Susan Bernard Frame, Christopher Todd Bernard, Gretchen Leigh Bernard Quaticci, Melinda Sue Jacques Leighton, Wendy Lee Jacques, Jennifer Susan Ann Leigh Borg and Joshua Joseph Leigh; foru great grandchildren, Sara Christine Frame, Grace Elizabeth Quatticci, Natasha Sue Leighton and Erica Marie Leighton; siblings, Amasa E. Bisbee and wife Ruby (Peg) Virginia Bisbee Chadburn of Auburn; and honorary members of her family, Sterling and Louise Hanson of Auburn.
