Text "Columbus C. Gooding, one of the pioneers of Colorado, died at his home, 118 Riverside avenue, South Canon, Friday morning of chronic heart diease, in the 85th year of his age. Deceased had lived here since 1889, previous to which he had been engaged in mining in various parts of the state and had several times amassed a competency which he dissipated by injudicious and unfortunate investments. Mr. Gooding was a native of Wisconsin and came to colorado before the Civil war. His first visit to Denver was in 1859, where there were only two or three log cabins there, and that from such unpromising beginnings a great metropolis should have grown up was always to him one of the marvels of civilization. Mr. gooding had many adventures with the Indians and was a friend of Ouray, chief of the Ute tribe, who jealously guarded the safety of the white settlements in southern Colorado during the war of the rebellion. The wife of the deceased died February 5th of the current year, since which Mr. Gooding has rapidly declined in physical vigor. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. J. T. Thomas, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, conducting the service. The interment was at Lakeside Cemetery."
