Various declarations and depositions show the following: Erastus D. Reynolds enrolled at French Creek, Chautauqua, New York, 1 Sep 1864 in Co. H, 15th New York Engineers (sappers and miners) commanded by Andrew Mangers. On or about April 10th, 1865, while in camp at City Point, Va., Erastus contracted chronic diarrhea due to exposures and deprivations, and over time became much weakened. He was given light duty and treated by a surgeon with quinine. Having a dread of hospitals, he moved on with his command. On 15 May, while on a march to Washington, D. C., about four miles from Manchester, Virginia, he was compelled to build, with others, a corduroy road and lift Army wagons which had become mired. While thus engaged, he suffered severe internal injuries to his right side and lung. He passed out and was placed in an ambulance which took him to camp at Manchester. Relieved of his knapsack, cartidges, blankets, etc., he straggled along with his command until he arrived at Arlington Heights near Washington, D.C., where he remained but a short time, before being taken to Elmira, N.Y. At Elmira he was immediately furloughed. Upon return from same, he was discharged. His pension declaration states he was honorably discharged at Fort Barry, Virginia, 13 June 1865.
