  • Notes
    • In a book titled, "Names and Sketches of the Pioneer Settlers of Madison County, New York," by William H. Tuttle (page 24), Tuttle lists "brothers" Joseph and Reuben Bisby as delegates to the Whig County Committee in 1834 and states they settled in Lebanon in 1815.

In the records of the First Baptist Church (Lebanon) we find the following:
"July 8, 1837, Joseph Bisbee and Harvey Niles asked (by the church) to visit Br. Towsley.
"July 15, 1837, Herman Towsley excluded for neglect of duty and lack of faith."

After his mother's death in 1856, and no doubt encouraged by the examples of his older brother Reuben, and sisters Lydia and Betsy, Joseph moved to Erie County, Pennsylvania, virtually starting over again, just as his father had done four decades earlier. With the exception of T. J., all of his children either accompanied him or soon followed.

Joseph's farm was located in an area of Erie County known as the "State Line Community." It was at the intersection of two state borders (Pennsylvania and New York) and four townships. At least six of Joseph's children had farms within walking distance--across the road or even adjacent to him--but because of political boundaries, they were resident in another township or in another state.

Upon Joseph's death in 1873, the following inventory of his estate was filed: 1 clock; 1 desk; 1 stand; 3 chairs; 1 bed stead; 3 log chains; augers, bits, saws, sandstone, iron bars, etc.; 1 set Bobb sleds, drag and wheelbarrow; 1 kettle; 1 plow; 1 saddle; 2 pigs; 1 wagon; 2 horses; 1 double harness; 2 cows; 1 heifer; 1 wood mill; corn in the field; 1 cultivator; 4 ½ tons of hay; oats in mow; corn in ear; potatoes in bin; Stove & dary (sic) utensils. Total value $203.75. (Erie County probate file no. 18897 ).

Joseph and Sally Ann Bisbee are buried next to each other in the southeast corner of the Wattsburg Cemetery. Their tombstones are difficult to find and all but impossible to read in 1998. [18]
