  • Notes 
    • George Dana Bisbee attended the public schools and at the outbreak of the Civil War was a student at Teacher's Normal in West Peru, Me. He assisted in organizing Company C of the 16th Maine Infantry and was made Orderly Sergeant. He served under Generals McClellan, Burnside, Hooker, Meade and Grant. He was wounded at Fredericksburg, Va. but refused to have his arm amputated and it never healed. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Caleb Robinson's Company of his regiment.

      Lieutenant Bisbee and his whole regiment were captured on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg and he was made a prisoner in Libby and other prisons until Dec. 1864. After being exchanged he refused his discharge and rejoined his regiment and was at Appomattox at the end of the war.

      George Dana Bisbee studied law with Randall and Winter at Dixfield, Me. and later practised law in Buckfield from 1866 to 1892 when he moved to Rumford Falls and formed the partnership of Bisbee and Parker. He was one of the foremost lawyers of the state and served as County Attorney of Oxford County, member of the bar, US Supreme Court, member of Gov. W. T. Cobb's Council of 1905. State Representative in 1872, State Senator in 1880 and US Marshal, District of Maine.

      George Bisbee was also president of the Rumford Falls Trust Co., a trustee and later president of Hebron Academy and director and attorney for the Rumford Falls Railroad. He was a Baptist.
