      The 1900 US census gives Benton's birthdate as October 1835. This date is supported by the 1880 and 1910 census returns. The 1870 census has him born in 1836--information probably provided by Susanna, who may have been confused about the year of her husband's birth. All of the returns have him born in Pennsylvania.
