  • Notes
    • Following from "The Melia Family" by Kay Melia

"Glenn Kirkpatrick, the son of another old pioneering family. Glen w
as a prominent cattleman, raising registered Shorthorn Cattle, as well as a lot of horses, including at least a dozen Shetland ponies at about any given time. Glen owned a couple of big threshing machines along with his dad and did a lot of custom threshing around the courntry. Glen and Jessie's farm was located about a mile south and a mile east of where Jessie was born on Grandad Newt's homeplace. Jessie had four children."

"The Kirkpatrick family was a busy one, and extremely hard working. Like most of us, they grew just about everything they ate during the years of the depression and the war. Glen died in 1962, and after living alone on the farm for a number of years, Jessie moved to Bucklin to live with Keith and Charlene, who created a complete independant apartment for her on the ground floor of their spacious home in the south part of Bucklin. Jessie was just over 90 when she passed away."

Crandall Melia (also a first cousin) Adds--------" What I remember about Uncle Glenn was his Modified Model A Ford roadster which had all of the body removed with the exception of from the windshield forward, with open cockpit and the back was built up with cage like boxes to hold the coyote dogs. He always had a pack of dogs which could track them down. We would ride across the open ground, some times with an airplane to flush them out, and when they were spotted, we would release the dogs to catch them. This was before the days of seat belts, and I just remember "hanging on." I also remember him as a larger than life John Wayne type, always wearing a buff colored Stetson and cowboy boots.

What I remember about the Kirkpatrick home(when I was a kid), was that they had the most fabulous feather bed mattresses which Aunt Jessie made, and they had a basement on the farm which was always cool in the hottest summer, and I used to go down there and lay in the feather bed in Keith"s room and read the most fantastic collections of Mechanics Illustrated magazines I had ever seen."
