    • From Madison County Civil War Soldiers Online: "LOOMIS, Edward 38 Hamilton Co. A, 176th NYSV d at Brashear City Hosp." Because of Morgan City's strategic marine location, the town of Brashear (Louisiana) played a prominent role in the war between the states. Brashear was occupied by Federal troops for over three years. It was in Morgan City that the Union troops planned the destruction of the Avery Island salt mines, the cutting off of Rebel supply lines from Texas, the capture of Texas to restore her to the Union, and the annihilation of all Confederate resistance in southwest Louisiana. The remains of Fort Starr (also known as Fort Brashear), a Union fort, are still visible. Near this site, now occupied by Atkinson Memorial Presbyterian Church, was the larger of two works erected to defend Morgan City, then Brashear City and a Federal military depot. On the night of June 22, 1863, 325 Confederates of Gen. A.A. Mouton's command landed their skiffs and flats at the rear of the town. Attacking the next day, they captured the garrison of 700 Federals and immense military stores, while suffering losses of only 3 killed, 18 wounded.
