  • Notes
    • Bernard was Born March 20, 1904 in Hutchinson, Kansas. This was the closest hospital at the time as none yet existed in Dodge City. His mother, Leona, boarded the train by herself at Bucklin, rode it to Hutchinson then took the street car from the railroad station to the hospital located on north Main Street. Fortunately Bernard waited a couple of days before making his appearance. After the birth if the child and a couple of days recuperating, she again boarded the street car and reversed the same procedure back to Bucklin, carrying child in her arms and waited for Jim to come pick her up in the horse and buggy. A very busy farmer was unable to accompany his wife on such ventures. Birth was just another normal event in those days.

He attended country school near 1 1/2 miles from home then went to Ford High School, then on to Kansas State University, graduating in 1927. He then returned to the family farm as a farmer. After retiring from the farm in 1978,( and after living there for 74 years) they purchased a home in Bucklin and lived there until he passed away. While farming, he served on many agricultural, state and local civic boards. During his retirement, he had a well equipped woodworking shop where he was usually found enjoying himself. [1]
