  • Notes
    • Family lore has it that Elwin went to Alaska in search of gold. By 1910, he was settled on a farm along Beaver Creek in Fergus County, Montana. Two brothers, Wilson and Winfield, and two sisters, Julia and Arvilla, also had property along Beaver Creek. By 1920 his siblings moved to Chelan, Washington. Elwin stayed on in Montana, taking up a farm in Garfield County.

Elwin lived alone and never remarried. He made several trips by train back to Erie County to visit his children, his last being around 1920 when he presented his son-in-law, Dell Bisbee, with a violin he brought back with him from the Klondike. The family recalls his stories of stringing ropes between his sod-bank house, outhouse and barn, so he would not get lost and freeze to death in the blinding snow storms that are common to the area. Elwin told of how he had trouble sleeping one night, and in the morning awoke to find a rattle snake curled up beside him in bed. It was said that he lived 50 miles from the nearest town and a hundred miles from a railroad. He died shortly after returning to Montana, under what the family believed were mysterious circumstances. In November, 1921, he was found along the side of a road. The circumstances suggest that he had come down with pneumonia and fell off his horse while riding to get help.
